A great washing machine will deliver you spotless clothes time and time again. While not the most exciting of topics, there are a number of things to consider when purchasing a new washing machine. These are our expert tips for buying a washing machine. If you have anything to add, please leave a comment in the comments section below.

Spin Speed

Every washing machine displays its spin speed. The spin speed of a washing machine is important as the higher the spin speed the drier your clothes will be when the washing machine spin cycle has finished. Spin Speed varies on domestic washing machines from 800RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) all the way up to 1800RPM. Expect to pay a little more for the higher speed washing machines.

Washing Machine Capacity

The capacity of a washing machine is the size of the drum. It is measured in litres or by the weight of dry clothes that the dryer will take. Typically washing machines can take 5KG to 12KG. 7Kg would be an average size washing machine for a family.

Water usage

Now that water charges are coming to Ireland, households will have to pay for excessive usage. We all must be conscious about how much water we are using.  How much water our machines consume is an important factor to consider when buying a machine. The average washing machine can use anything between 53 L to 94.6 L per load. Warranty

Many washing machines now come with long warranties for parts and labour. Buying a machine with a long warranty could save you money over the long term.

Connections

When choosing a washing machine, it is important to make sure that the correct services are located where you want to put the washing machine. If choosing a machine that has a warm feed, ensure the hot water feed is available where you want to put the machine.

If you choose a washing machine that also acts as a tumble dryer you may want to make sure you have an extractor vent available for the machine.

Energy Rating

All washing machines now come with an energy rating. Since 2004 all appliances in a store must have their energy rating displayed. This label indicates how much energy they use. Appliances are rated from A-G with appliances rated A being the most efficient.

Available Programmes.

Modern machines have a host of programmes that can now be used to

  • Work around your schedule.
  • Save energy.
  • Perform specific cleaning tasks.
  • Use different ranges of cleaning temperatures.
